DAYTON — The quick thinking of firefighters help save the lives of five kittens during a house fire in Dayton Wednesday night.
Agents with the Greater Dayton Humane Society were called to a house fire in Dayton to reports of animals in need of help, according to a social media post by the humane society.
“When our humane society agent arrived, he found an ambulance full of uniformed firefighters. Exhausted after fighting the blaze, they now sat on their engine, each one holding a helpless, defenseless kitten in their hands,” the post reads.

Five kittens, around two weeks old, were found under the floorboards of an abandoned house that was involved in the fire.
Once firefighters located the kittens they tore up the floorboards until every kitten was found, according to the humane society.
The kittens’ mother, unfortunately, died in the fire.
The firefighters wrapped each kitten in a towel with a heating pack inside to keep them warm.
“If it wasn’t for the quick acting and gentle care of these firefighters, we are certain the kittens would have perished in the fire,” the humane society stated.
All five kittens were taken into the humane society’s care and are currently in the care of a foster home as they continue to grow strong and healthy.
