DAYTON — Multiple callers to 911 reported rocks stuck their vehicles late Saturday, causing damage while motorists traveled on U.S. 35 near Smithville Road.
“A massive object just came at our windshield and our windshield is shattered,” a woman from Illinois told dispatchers.
In the call you hear a child crying in the background, however, the woman said no one appeared to be injured.

“I think everyone’s OK there’s just glass all over the car,” the woman said.
In all, 18 vehicles sustained smashed windshields and dents during a half-hour time frame.
The Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center said they started receiving calls around 10 p.m. and the last one was received at 10:29 p.m.
Wendell Akur was headed west on U.S. 35 Saturday night.
“I was just driving down the highway, then bang,” he said on Monday.
He was one of more than a dozen motorists who pulled over while they waited for police.
“I kept going for a little bit before I reacted. I pulled over in front of all those cars. I talked to everyone who had damage to their windshield. It was a bunch of us,” Akur said.
Dayton police arrested one male juvenile at the scene, who admitted throwing rocks, according to a Dayton police report. The boy was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, where he was booked on several counts of vandalism. He said he had an accomplice, another male juvenile, but it was not clear whether that youth was arrested as well.

Akur said he doesn’t think young people understand how dangerous something like this is.
“There was a woman shaking on the scene,” he said.
Now, Akur said all he can do is hope he isn’t the one who has to pay to fix his car. “My deductible is $1,000, so even with insurance it’s $1,000 unless someone else pays for it, parents or somebody.”
