RANDOLPH COUNTY — A man who fired as police responded to a house on Pleasant Drive in Union City Monday morning is dead, according to Indiana State Police.

Union City, Indiana police officers responded to a suspicious person call around 7 a.m. Monday in the 100 block of Pleasant.

After arriving at the residence, the man exited from the bushes and started shooting, said Trooper Ryan Davis with Indiana State Police. Davis said the man was found dead in the bushes.

Davis said there was an exchange of gunfire between police and the suspect. Three Union City officers responded to the initial call, however it’s still unclear how many of those officers fired their weapons, Davis said.

The suspect’s Ford pickup truck was found less than a block from the scene and was surrounded by police tape.

Until around 9 a.m., Randolph Eastern Schools were taking precautions to keep students safe.

“The issue does not include the school and we are taking the precautions necessary ensure that it does not,” the school said as the shooting incident unfolded.

State police said they are still working through the early portions of their investigation and were not able to release any further information on how the man who fired at police died.

No officers were hurt during the shooting.

Police recovered a AR-15 and AK-47 from the suspect, ISP said.

Investigators are still working to determine how many shots were fired during the exchange of gunfire.

The man’s identity has not been released.
