DAYTON — Officials with AES Ohio are urging homeowners to be aware of scams involving the company.
AES Ohio posted on its Facebook page that people claiming to be an employee of AES Ohio are going from house to house with an offer to lower their utility bills.
Company officials said AES Ohio employees and contractors who visit homeowners will have an AES Ohio ID badge for legitimacy.
AES Ohio said it has received numerous customer reports about being scammed by identity theft and credit card schemes.
Customers are asked to call AES Ohio if they believe they have become a victim of a utility scam involving its company.
Here are some helpful tips that you should keep in mind when it comes to AES Ohio’s process for requesting and receiving customer information:
- If AES Ohio does call a customer, our representative will have specific and accurate information related to the customer’s billing and account.
- If AES Ohio employees or contractors visit your home or business, they will carry an AES Ohio identification badge.
- AES Ohio does not require nor strongly recommends a specific payment method or type. We offer a variety of payment options so customers can select the one that best suits them.
- Be on alert, especially if someone demands payment by pre-paid debit (often referred to as “Greendot”) or Bitcoin, a type of cryptocurrency.
- AES Ohio also reminds customers not to provide personal information or comply with requests for payments unless they are confident with whom they are speaking.
- AES Ohio also warns customers to be aware of their personal safety and only make payments in person at an authorized pay agent.
