Air Force hopes ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ inspires next generation of military pilots

HUBER HEIGHTS — Three decades after the original movie took to the skies, “Top Gun: Maverick” is flying into theatres.

The release of the original, Top Gun, in 1986 generated excitement about careers in military aviation, something military recruiters hope to see again.

“A buzz, gets the people talking about the Air Force or just aviation in general.’” Technical Sergeant and Air Force Recruiter Corey Baxley said.

While the Top Gun movies are centered around the Naval Pilots, the Air Force is still hoping to be part of that buzz.

“Serve our country and uphold air superiority. That’s what we do on a day-to-day basis. This movie is going to show this. Whether it be Navy-based or Air Force-based or Army-based,” Baxley told News Center 7′s James Rider.

To try and help capitalize on the buzz the Air Force is releasing its new commercial that will also run in theatres with the movie.

“The commercial in my opinion brought an air show to a movie theater or to your home to really highlight what we do,” Baxley said.

The movie was originally scheduled to be released in there’s in 2019 but had several setbacks. It was released on May 24.
