Skier waves down rescue helicopter on Steven's Pass

STEVENS PASS, WA — A piece of technology likely saved a backcountry skier from freezing to death.

Our sister KIRO TV in Seattle reports that King County Air Supported responded Wednesday after being requested by the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office after an Apple Watch SOS came through about an injured skier.

The only information deputies had was that the skier fell 1,000 feet and had a leg injury.

Rescuers responded after sunset and eventually found the skier, KIRO TV reports.

In a video posted on YouTube by King County Air Support, it shows the skier’s friend waving down a helicopter.

The rescue happened near Union Peak. The skier’s status is currently unknown, KIRO TV reports.
