Area couple married for 59 years die a day apart

MONROE — An area husband and wife who were married for 59 years died within a day of each other earlier this month.

Letitia and Larry Curless, 87 and 83, of Monroe, died on December 21 and 22, according to a joint obituary.

The couple was introduced to each other by Larry’s mother in 1964.

“He asked her out on a first date to play tennis, it didn’t take long for them to fall in love and marry in 1965,” the obituary stated.

Prior to becoming a stay-at-home mom, Letitia was a teacher for Deer Park Schools and Middletown City Schools. She also worked in catering a the Beach Water Club and as Mrs. Claus for several organizations.

Larry was a mechanical engineer for Armco/Ak Steel for over 35 years. He also enjoyed doing volunteer work.

The couple were “devoted members” of the First Presbyterian Church and the Kiwanis Club of Middletown.

They’re survived by their son and multiple other family members.

A visitation for the couple will be held on Jan. 3 at First Presbyterian Church and a Celebration of Life Service will follow. More information can be found here.
