RANDOLPH COUNTY, Indiana — An area firefighter died after battling a house fire on Thursday, according to the Randolph County, Indiana Homeland Security Emergency Management (HSEM).

Winchester firefighters responded to a house fire in the 200 block of Watson Street Thursday afternoon, according to a Randolph County dispatcher.

Randolph County HSEM posted to social media saying a Winchester firefighter had a medical emergency while battling the fire.
“Sadly, the firefighter did not recover from his medical emergency,” the post said.
The firefighter was escorted to IU Ball Memorial by his “emergency services brothers and sisters.”
The firefighter’s identity was not immediately available.
“We ask that you lift up the firefighters immediate and work family, the on-scene responders, the 911 dispatchers at the mic, and his friends,” the post said.
Indiana TV stations WXIN-59 and WTHR-13 report that Randolph County Coroner Darin James will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
First responders across Indiana gathered to show their support for the Winchester Fire Department.
The Yorktown Fire Department posted on social media that several departments went to Ball Memorial Hospital to honor the firefighter.
