As News Center 7 previously reported, an extended stretch of highs above 90 is in the forecast for the region this week.
This is being called a heat wave due to the projected three or more days in a row with highs above 90.
As long as the forecast verifies this will be our 3rd heat wave of 2024.
Eight of the nine schools in the district do not have air conditioning. Parents know first-hand how hot it can get inside of the buildings.
“Even when we were doing the open house. Just going in there for a little bit to meet the teachers. It’s very warm,” said Kim Wehrkamp
Wehrkamp is a stay-at-home mom who says the schedule change isn’t a big deal for her.
“I’m very blessed to be able to pick up my children and make that arrangement. ‘Oh, they get out an hour earlier or two hours early’ or whatever. You know, I can do that,” Wehrkamp said.
News Center 7 asked Troy City Schools Superintendent Chris Piper what he would say to families who do have to shift schedules around.
“We certainly understand that, which is one of the reasons why we try to announce these kinds of things as soon as possible,” Piper said. “‘It’s never fun sending kids home from school. We want our children in school, but on days like this or days in the winter, we certainly understand that parents have to make arrangements. So that’s why we try to give as much notice as possible.”
Piper said they’ll keep an eye on Thursday and Friday and adjust as needed.
Troy voters approved a bond issue in November which means as long as things move along on the district’s timeline, every building in the district will have air conditioning for the 2027-28 school year.
