Arrest warrant issued for Georgia man charged in deadly I-75 crash

DAYTON — A Georgia semi driver is wanted after a grand jury indicted him Tuesday on more than a half-dozen charges in a crash that killed an Indiana woman on Interstate 75 in Dayton.

Thomas Massey, 31, of Jesup, Ga., was indicted on two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, three counts of aggravated vehicular assault, three counts of vehicular assault and aggravated possession of drugs, according to court records.

Massey was the driver of the semi that around 5 p.m. on April 23, 2018, rear-ended a black 2013 Cadilllac SRX driven by Candice Flaugher, 46, of Richmond, Indiana, on I-75 North. Flaugher’s vehicle was slowing down for traffic in front of her when she was hit by Massey, pushing her into a box truck in front of her, according to a Dayton Police Department traffic crash report.

Police indicated that Massey was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, according to the report.

Flaugher’s two passengers, Jason Pipenger, 45, and Patty Spaulding, 45, both of Richmond, also were taken with serious injuries to Miami Valley Hospital, where Flaugher died of her injuries, records show.

Massey was scheduled to be arraigned April 16 for his arraignment.
