Artists to present design proposals for Oregon District shooting memorial to public

DAYTON — Five artist teams will present their proposed designs for an Oregon District shooting memorial to the public this week.

The memorial will honor the nine people who lost their lives in a mass shooting in the Dayton neighborhood on Aug. 4, 2019.

The five teams were selected by a panel of jurors after over 30 teams submitted their entries in late 2022, according to a media release.

Artists will present their work at the Dayton Metro Library Main Branch on East Third Street on May 23-24 starting at 2 p.m.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

“We are eager to see what the semi-finalists have envisioned for the 8/4 Memorial project,” Eva Buttacavoli, Executive Director of the Contemporary Dayton said in a media release. “These artist teams were selected by a panel of experts and we know they have been working diligently over the past few months to create impactful designs.”

The committee said they plan to announce the design selection by Aug. 4, 2023.

The winning team will get $200,000 to create the public art memorial which will be located in the plaza adjacent to the Trolly Stop on East Fifth Street.
