An assault reported early Friday on campus at the University Circle has the University of Dayton police tonight issuing a safety advisory for the campus community.

Because of the lag time in reporting the incident, UD police were unable to search the area for suspects, according to the statement.

UD Public Safety officials were told that three students were walking near the chapel when they were approached by three males in a black, four-door vehicle.

The two groups argued and one of the males in the vehicle got out and hit one of the students in the head with an object the students believe was a handgun.

The students described the assailant as a short person whose hair was in an "Afro-type" style. A second male in the car was described as thin with curly red hair. There was no description of the third male in the car.

If you have information about the incident, you are asked to contact UD Public Safety at 937-229-2121.
