Austin Landing to motorists: slow down; outdoor mall considers speed limit

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — Slow down. That’s the message from Austin Landing, a hub for shopping, dining, entertainment and office space.

Austin Landing is considering enforcing a speed limit at the Miami Twp. mixed-use development, where there are a number of stop signs, but no speed signs.

Austin Landing has more than 2,500 people who work there, and even more who walk and drive around the area every day.

Larry Dillin, president of Viscap Development, which manages Austin Landing, said he wants to add a 25 mph speed limit to improve safety.

Some shoppers said they didn’t notice a speed limit is not posted.

“My wife and I come down here pretty regularly and I did not notice there’s not a sign,” Bill Duff of Miami Twp. said. “The streets are so short, two or three blocks at a time. I don’t think I have gone over 20- 25 (mph) to begin with.”

Miami Twp. officials said they do not have a say on speed limits because Austin Landing is private property. The township did approve adding a traffic light near Kroger to help with traffic flow.

The new speed limit at Austin Landing would be enforced by Miami Twp. police.

People who work and shop at Austin Landing say fast driving is a problem at times.

“There is way too many people who speed, who don’t pay attention to what they are doing. They are all in their mind ready to get somewhere,” Jane Miller of Miami Twp. said.

Miller said because you have to cross the street to go from store to store, she doesn’t want her granddaughter or anyone else to get hurt.

“She sometimes takes off on us and the speed limit has gotta slow down,” Miller said.

The timing of the proposed speed limit has not been decided, but when it is we will keep you informed.
