DAYTON — Public Health Dayton & Montgomery County will host an immunization clinic next week to provide required vaccinations for students entering the seventh and 12th grades.

Health officials will be on hand for the event at the Dayton Kroc Center, at 1000 North Keowee Street, Wednesday Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The State of Ohio requires all students in the seventh grade to be vaccinated for pertussis, also known a whooping cough, and meningitis. Students entering the 12th grade are required by the state to receive their second dose of the meningitis vaccine.
Students who are attending school virtually are still required to receive these vaccinations, a PHDMC spokesperson said.
The immunization clinic will also have the recommended human papillomavirus virus vaccine available. Other childhood vaccines will not be offered, officials said.
The clinic was organized in response to lower immunization rates in children in 2020, compared to a year ago. Health officials said that is due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic, with parents avoiding required vaccinations for their children as an effort to stay away from others.
“During the pandemic, Ohio’s policies requiring mandatory vaccinations for returning students have not changed,” Montgomery County Health Commissioner, Jeff Cooper said in the media release. “Public Health and our partners want to help families by providing a safe and convenient way for kids to be protected as they return to school.”
Social distancing requirements will be in place and facial coverings are required. Masks will be provided to those who do not have them.
Free RTA transportation will be provided to the clinic. Organizers said passengers must let the driver know they are going to the clinic and all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Free parking will also be provided at the Kroc Center.
Parents are asked to bring their health insurance information, however no children will be refused service because of an inability to pay, organizers said.
