Birthday party turns into boxing matches with injuries; police are investigating

The dads of two teenage girls who were injured at a party Saturday night in German Twp.,, where they said they were forced to box other girls, want any parent involved to be prosecuted.

Davde Philpot said his 16-year-old suffered an injury to her shoulder, which may be separated or broken.

Chris Gephart said his 15-year-old suffered a concussion after being hit repeatedly in the back of her head.

German Twp. Police said they are investigating the report of the party, attended by 40 to 60 teenagers, that involved some boxing. No charges are being pursued, police told News Center 7’s Sean Cudahy on Monday, but the party is being investigated and the case will be presented to the county prosecutor’s office for consideration.

“When I first heard about it, I was just disgusted,” Philpot said. “They were having a mini-fight club in their basement and allowing their child to do this. I think they need to be prosecuted...if people are turning a blind eye to this, they need to be stopped.”

Both men said their daughters told them they had been invited to the birthday party at the house on Oxford Road in German Twp. After they had been there awhile, the dads said, the girls were told they would have to fight -- with or without boxing gloves.

Both young woman said they felt like they had no choice but to engage in the fisticuffs, the dads said.

Gephart said, “I’m sick over it. I’m appalled that parents would allow something like this to happen.”

Philpot filed a police report with German Twp. police and posted a video of the fighting he said was not his video, but one that’s also circulating on the Valley View Spartans Facebook page.

Gephart said from the video of the fights he watched, no one was helping the girls had been beaten.

“Everyone was sitting back” he said.
