The American Red Cross has declared an emergency need for blood donors, saying the nationwide supply is at the lowest level seen in years.

“With Thanksgiving and the holidays approaching, the American Red Cross urges donors to continue to make and keep appointments now and in the weeks ahead to help overcome the ongoing emergency blood shortage that has significantly impacted the nation’s blood supply,” a Red Cross spokesperson said in a media release Wednesday.

“In fact, the current blood supply is the lowest the Red Cross has seen this time of year in more than a decade.”

Despite issuing an emergency request for more donations last month, the Red Cross said at least 10,000 more donations are needed each week nationwide to meet current needs and to prepare for the holiday season, as the holidays present seasonal challenges for blood collection, the spokesperson said.

To encourage more donations, the Red Cross has announced an incentive program with the chance to win a trip to Hawaii. Donors who give between Nov. 1 and 12 will be entered to win a trip for two to Hawaii, courtesy of Amazon Prime Video, in honor of the company’s new series “I Know What You Did Last Summer” that was filmed on the islands.

“The trip will transport you to where the series was filmed and includes round-trip airfare for two, hotel accommodations for nine nights, meals, $1,000 gift card for expenses and on-trip transportation with tour stops from Honolulu to Maui. Plus, those who come to donate Nov. 1-23 will receive a $10 Amazon.com Gift Card by email, thanks to Amazon.”

Upcoming donation opportunities have been scheduled across the region through November. Appointments can be scheduled at RedCrossBlood.org or 1-800-733-2767.
