UPDATE: 1 taken to hospital after fire destroys Springfield home

SPRINGFIELD — One person was taken to the hospital after a house fire in Springfield early Saturday morning.

Fire crews responded to the 100 block of North Shaffer Street on the report of a house fire around 3:50 a.m., according to initial emergency scanner traffic.

Additional reports say heavy smoke could be seen coming from the house as crews arrived.

Asst. Fire Chief Matt Smith tell us one person was injured and taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Four adults were displaced and around $53,000 of damages were done by the blaze. Firefighters were on the scene for over six hours.

Springfield Police dispatch tells us West Columba Street was shut down at North Shaffer St.

Video from the scene shows flames erupting from the roof as crews work on dousing the fire.
