Destiny Wells, 17, was identified by state troopers as the victim killed in the crash. The passenger in the vehicle, identified as Traymonta McKinney, 20, of Springfield, was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center with injuries described as non-life threatening, state troopers said in a media release.
The crash was reported on Old Clifton Road north of East Possum Road around 4 a.m. Monday.
Wells was a student-athlete at Springfield High School.
“Destiny is remembered for her sweet disposition and outgoing personality on and off the basketball court. Her family and friends will remain in our thoughts during this incredibly difficult time,” said Springfield Superintendent Bob Hill.
Counselors will be available for students from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Springfield High School Auxiliary Gym on Tuesday and Wednesday for any students from SHS or the CTC need assistance or grief support.
An initial investigation found the vehicle, driven by Wells, went off the left side of the road, crashed into a tree, and overturned multiple times, Lt. Brian Aller said in the media release.
The crash ejected Wells from the vehicle and the teen was pronounced dead at the scene by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
Wells was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, Aller said.
Excessive speed and not wearing a seat belt were contributing factors in the crash, Aller said.
Additional details were not released.
