Counselors on campus for girl killed, sisters injured in Miami County semi crash

UPDATE @ 8:52 p.m.: Counselors were on the campus of Miami East Local Schools in Casstown tonight to help those grieving the girl killed and her sisters who were injured in the two-vehicle crash on U.S. 36, Superintendent Todd Rappold said.

Counselors will be on campus next as well for students and staff, he said.

INITIAL REPORT

An 11-year-old girl died and two of her sisters were injured in a two-vehicle crash involving a semi at U.S. 36 and North Lena-Palestine Road in Brown Twp., Miami County.

Multiple medical helicopters were called to the crash reported about 11:30 a.m.

The 11-year-old was a front passenger in the car driven by her 17-year-old sister.

Deputies said the driver of the car, which pulled into the path of the semitrailer, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital. The third sister, a 13-year-old passenger, was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center.

All three were wearing seat belts.

Their conditions were not immediately released.

All three girls were students at Miami East Local schools, the sheriff’s office said.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was headed south on Lena-Palestine Road when she pulled into the path of the semi, according to the sheriff’s office. The driver of the semi, who was headed east on U.S. 36, was not injured.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drugs being a factor.
