An eighth-grader at Centerville’s Watts Middle School has won the Dayton Area Spelling Bee.
Arjun Kurup out-spelled 14 other students and earned a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., at the end of May.

He initially thought he missed his opportunity to advance to the national bee.
“There were three of us left, and I missed by word,” he said. “But then the next two people missed their words, too, so I was able to go back up.”

Along the way to winning this spelling bee, Kurup also won his school-wide bee among sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
