Centerville freshmen football team suspends training after positive COVID-19 test

CENTERVILLE — A freshman football player at Centerville High School has tested positive for coronavirus, prompting the district to suspend skill training until procedures can be completed.

The district was made aware of the positive test Friday and notified all the families and coaches that may have been impacted, so additional precautions could be taken, district spokeswoman Sarah Swan told News Center 7.

The case only has impacted the freshmen team.

“We have sanitized the facility space used by that team and are working with Dayton and Montgomery Public Health on our next steps,” Swan said. “Because this team has not trained with any others, we are allowing our other teams to continue with conditioning and practices.”

The team resumed skills training on June 1, with coaches and athletes following guidelines from the Ohio High School Athletic Association and the Ohio Department of Health.

Social distancing, no physical contact with others, hand sanitizing stations and cleaning/sanitizing of equipment and facilities has been done during the training.

The district has been working to complete contract tracing and self-isolation following the positive test. Once those are completed the freshmen team will be able to resume training.
