“The Purple Heart City designation is a way to commemorate the fight for freedom and respect for the founding of our country. It is a sacred patriotic trust to continue that for generations,” said Purple Heart Trail Coordinator for the State of Ohio Randy Howson.
The Purple Heart is a decoration awarded to soldiers who have been killed or wounded while serving.

"Becoming a Purple Heart City on July 1, right before July 4 is particularly special as Centerville has many residents and visitors who have given so much in service to our country in earning the Purple Heart. As a City, we want each service member awarded the Purple Heart to know that we recognize them as heroes, welcome them to Centerville and always respect their service and sacrifice," Centerville Mayor Brooks Compton said.
