Suspended attorney arrested after high-speed chase near Urbana

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY — An Urbana-based attorney, who recently had his state license to practice law suspended, is in custody again after a high-speed chase that ended in a crash south of Urbana Monday afternoon.

Ryan S. Reed, 39, was arrested after crashing a purple Dodge Charger on Woodburn Road west of U.S. 68, Champaign County Sheriff Matt Melvin said. It’s the third time he’s been in jail since May.

Deputies chased Reed after area agencies were alerted to possible threats he may have made involving a woman in Urbana, according to emergency dispatch traffic.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m.

Reed was already in legal trouble after he was accused of entering a woman’s home on Scioto Street on May 14 around 7:30 p.m. and the woman told police Reed, who she had a protection order against, appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

Reed ran from the house and a warrant was issued for his arrest, court records showed.

A grand jury indicted Reed earlier this month on two counts of burglary, four counts of violating a protection order, one count of OVI, one count of domestic violence and one count of assault. The burglary charges and two of the protection order charges are felonies.

Ohio Supreme Court records show Reed’s accused actions in May had been the latest in several issues involving the attorney. Several lawyers and judges brought up issues of Reed failing to report for hearings in cases where he was an attorney for a client.

State records showed some of the problems were said to “at least in part, stem from a severe and untreated drug and alcohol addiction.”

Reed was issued a interim remedial suspension to practice law in the state by Ohio pending the results of his criminal case.
