DAYTON — A house fire on Bell Street that was reportedly started by squatters Monday morning remains under investigation, according to fire officials.

Fire crews responded to the 70 block and found a small fire coming from the second floor just after 6 a.m.

Further investigation revealed the fire, which is believed to have started in the chimney, spread from the first floor of the house to the attic, according to officials.

Firefighters were able to quickly knock the fire down and no injuries were reported.

The house was supposed to be vacant, but there were homeless people staying inside, officials said.

“It appears they started the fire to try and stay warm”, said Dist. Chief Rennes Bowers with the Dayton Fire Department.

Damage estimates are approximately $5,000.
