Christmas tree arrives to downtown Springfield for ‘Holiday in the City’ celebration

SPRINGFIELD — The Christmas tree arrived to Downtown Springfield today for the city’s Holiday in the City celebration.

According to the city, the holiday celebration will begin with the Grand Illumination of downtown on November 26th and will continue through January 7th.

The city says it is expanding lights and sound to include the North Fountain shops corridor, which will be active every night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Events will include the AuroraMax light show on December 10th and 11th, SantaCon at Mother Stewart’s Brewery, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas at the Clark State Performing Arts Center and Christmas with the Celts presented by the Springfield Arts Council, according to a release.

Santa is also scheduled to visit a number of downtown locations including the Springfield Public Library, Springfield Museum of Art and the Heritage Center Museum, among others.

Other “pop-up” events will be announced throughout December, the release said.

A new outdoor ice rink is also expected to open later this month at City Hall Plaza downtown as part of the Holiday in the City festivities.

Tentative operating hours are expected to be Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturdays 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be a $5 fee to skate for up to an hour and skate rental will be $2.

The rink is expected to be open through Jan. 2.
