Polling location in question after fire at Kettering church

KETTERING — The location where some Kettering voters are planning to vote next Tuesday is in question after a Kettering church that serves as a polling location on Election Day caught fire over the weekend.

The Spaulding Road Church of God was heavily damaged after a fire Saturday morning.

The Montgomery County Board of Elections said no ballot machines or other voting equipment was damaged in the fire. The board is still gauging what impact the fire may have on voters that had planned to vote at the location next Tuesday, especially since the church is without power to run the voting machines.

The pastor of the church arrived around 5:20 a.m. to find smoke coming from the roof and the windows black and very hot, according to Kettering Fire Battalion Chief Brian Beaver.

Firefighters have not yet determined the cause or a cost estimate for the damage.

Beaver said the fire did start in the basement and caused extensive heat, smoke damage to the basement and first floor of the church.
