TROTWOOD — Halloween is just a few weeks away and local officials are working to make sure the children in their communities stay safe while trick-or-treating.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00, for eight years, the City of Trotwood has hosted a trunk-or-treat event to make sure children have a safe environment to enjoy the holiday.

This year’s event took place at the Flight Academy.
News Center 7 spoke with some children who said they had a great time.
“I think it’s really cool. You get like double-loaded before, like actually before Halloween starts. So you get like double the candy,” Trotwood resident Keiarra Grindle said.
Grindle said this was her first time at a trunk of treat.
She hopes her parents let her dig into the candy when she gets home.
“But first it has to be checked, yeah, to see if it’s okay,” Grindle said.
Police say checking the candy is something they always tell parents they need to do.
“Mainly just to make sure you stay with the kids…Try to inspect the candy when you get back home and make sure it’s not tampered with,” Officer Keiondre Taylor said.
Trotwood Mayor Yvette Page and Vice Mayor Tyna Brown said the city wants to change the stigma about having to travel elsewhere for necessities and fun.
“We’re letting parents know this is a safe environment because that’s not how it’s always portrayed when you came to Trotwood,” Page said.
“It’s more so for our kids and for the parents, for them to be educated of their surroundings,” Brown said.
Former Flyer, and owner of the Flight Academy, Chris Wright made this Trunk of Treat possible.
He said it’s important to be a good example for the kids.
“If you’re a citizen in the community and you’re from here, you want to support those that support you,” Wright said.
Mayor Yvette Page told News Center 7 that they are working on more community events as the holidays approach.
