The city has tabbed the event on the one year mark as “Dayton Shines,” a reference to the Gem City Shine event that took place in the entertainment district just days after the mass shooting that killed nine victims and injured 32 more.

“In the midst of an already difficult year, on August 4, 2019, we joined the sad list of cities terrorized by a mass shooting,” Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley said in a press release Friday.

“Although we have been forced to change our initial plans due to the current health crisis, we are hopeful that these events will still allow people to express themselves and still come together as a community.”

Events included in during Dayton Shines:

  • Nine Minutes of Silence: Starting at 8:04 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 4, nine minutes of silence will be observed in remembrance of the nine victims killed. City officials will provide a link to a video tribute on the city’s Facebook page for nine minutes during the moment of silence.
  • Photo Mosaic: The mosaic will be comprised of a collection of contributed pictures. “The final mosaic design will showcase how the Dayton community continues to remember those who were lost, and how we have come together and continue to work to make Dayton shine in their honor.” The final mosaic will be unveiled on Aug. 4 and is considered a community project, with everyone invited to contribute.
    • To submit a photo, you’re asked to take a photo of yourself, family and friends, or something that represents the Dayton community to you. Text that photo to 937-230-7547. And reply “yes” to the automated text response to confirm your photo entry into the mosaic.
