Clark County Combined Health District pauses COVID-19 boosters amid updated shot

CLARK COUNTY — Following the announcement of a new, bivalent COVID-19 booster shot targeting omicron, the Clark County Combined Health District (CCCHD) is temporarily pausing administering COVID-19 booster shots.

The CCCHD will no longer administer the current “monovalent” booster vaccines, meaning appointments set for Thursday have been postponed and will need to be rescheduled.

Health officials said the decision was in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control. The new, bivalent booster shots were created to combat against both the original strain of COVID-19 and Omicron strains.

The updated booster received emergency use authorization by the Food and Drug Administration Wednesday.

Eligible people who are 12 years or older will be able to get the updated booster so long as it has been at least two months since the completion of their primary series of vaccination, or their most recent booster.

The pause of boosters came as the CDC waits recommendations for the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Doses of the new vaccine cannot be administered until the CDC endorses the ACIP’s recommendations.
