“We have about 18 key areas that we drive and we look at here in Beavercreek, and we’re monitoring,” Beavercreek Superintendent Paul Otten said.

Otten says that the district checks the school buildings and the nearby road conditions.

“If some of those are not clean and they’re not covered, they’ll close the whole district down,” Otten said.

The district has to make their final call by 5:30 a.m. According to Otten, he talks to superintendents all over Greene County to make sure they’re making the best decision for their students.

“We’re more concerned about the student being in their garage waiting to see the bus. And as the bus is pulling up, they are running from their house. We know when they’re running, there may be slick spots,” Otten said.

Transportation to and from school can be a deciding factor for schools as well. When it gets this cold, and the buses are covered in snow, sometimes they won’t start.

“On a morning like today, we bring in all five mechanics so that we can get all the buses started before the bus drivers arrive and start checking into possible issues,” Transportation Supervisor Lindy Shumaker said.
