COLUMBUS — The Columbus Zoo’s baby Asian elephant calf finally has a name.
The zoo announced that a donor family named him “Frankie” in honor of their late mother.

“Their mother was a nurse practitioner who spent her career delivering babies—and they say she would have been so in love with this little 500-pound guy. Her family is honored to help name this incredible elephant calf to honor their mom,” the zoo said in a social media post.
Frankie, who made his arrival during the early morning of June 16, was born to the zoo’s 33-year-old Asian elephant, Phoebe.
The zoo said Frankie is Phoebe’s fourth calf born at the zoo and her fifth calf overall. Her last calf, Ellie, sadly passed away a few weeks after her birth in 2018 due to a bacterial infection.
Just two other live Asian elephants have been born at the Columbus Zoo throughout the zoo’s history, according to the zoo.
