Community Blood Center winter storm closure, blood drive cancellations cause loss of blood supply

DAYTON — The cancellation of Community Blood Center blood drives and the closing of the Dayton CBC Thursday because a winter storm resulted in the loss of over 400 units of blood.

In a release, CBC said that Type O blood is in low supply and they anticipate a short supply of other blood types and platelets.

Dayton CBC was able to reopen Friday and had almost 50 donors, there were also platelet and plasma donors who were able to keep their appointment.

Hours will be extended Saturday Feb. 5, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Anyone who registers to donate on Saturday, at the Dayton CBC, will receive a $10 dollar Kroger gift card and a free “Counting on You in 2022″ long-sleeve T-shirt.

Three mobile blood drives are also scheduled for Saturday:

  • Oakwood community blood drive Saturday, Feb. 5 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Oakwood Community Center, 105 Patterson Road.
  • Reid Health community blood drive Saturday, Feb. 5 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1100 Reid Parkway, Richmond.
  • St. Peter Catholic Church community blood drive Saturday, Feb. 5 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, 6185 Chambersburg Road, Huber Heights.

Blood donation requirements:

  • Photo ID with the donor’s full name
  • CBC donor ID card for past donors
  • Must be at least 17 years or older (16 years of age will need parental consent)
  • Weigh a minimum of 110 pounds (may have to weigh more depending on height)
  • Must be in good physical health
