Community honors Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Yates with memorial walk

SPRINGFIELD — Loved ones, coworkers, and the community honored Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Matthew Yates with a memorial walk Friday afternoon.

Hundreds of people came out for the walk that was organized by the wives of the Clark County Memorial Sheriff’s Office at the Clark County Fairgrounds, including people of all ages.

Deputy Yates was shot and killed Sunday after responding to a 911 call about a gunfire at a Clark County mobile home park.

The walk started out at the fairgrounds command post for the Clark County Sheriff’s Office and ended at a track area on the fairgrounds.

Michele Elliot, a mother of a Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy, spoke with News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis about why she came and show her support.

“You know, you just feel so bad, but you can’t do anything but support them,” she said. “You have to support all the deputies because their involved personally and it takes a lot out of them.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Officer was out in front of the walk, leading it through the fairgrounds.

The visitation for Clark County Sheriff Deputy Matthew Yates will be held Sunday at First Christian Church from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The funeral will be Monday at 12 p.m. at First Christian Church, followed by the burial at Ferncliff Cemetery.
