WASHINGTON TWP. — A new construction project is gearing up to start in Washington Township and it will impact traffic for drivers.
On Monday, April 18, crews will begin a $967,000 project to reconstruct the intersection of Mad River and Alex Bell roads into a roundabout. The construction is estimated to take four months and will cause road closures during that period.

According to Montgomery County Engineer’s Office, the new design with improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection. The new design will reduce travel times between destinations in West Carrollton, Moraine, Kettering, Centerville and Miami Township.
The following will be the posted detours:
- Alex Bell Road westbound: McEwen Road to State Route 725 to Alex Bell Road
- Alex Bell Road eastbound: Munger Road to Mad River Road to Yankee Street to State Route 725 to Alex Bell Road
- Mad River Road southbound: Whipp Road to Far Hills Avenue (State Route 48) to Alex Bell Road to McEwen Road to State Route 725 to Mad River Road
- Mad River Road northbound: Yankee Street to State Route 725 to McEwen Road to Alex Bell Road to State Route 48 to Whipp Road to Mad River Road

Eight new street lights will also be installed to improve safety.
There will also be a landscaping for the roundabout that will include over 800 perennials, 130 deciduous shrubs, 190 evergreen shrubs, and six sweetbay magnolia trees at the intersection.
On average, roundabouts reduce total crashed by 35 percent, injuries by 76 percent and fatalities by 90 percent, according to a release.
