OHIO — The Ohio Department of Commerce’s Division of Liquor Control is extending the filing deadline for liquor permit holders to renew their class C and D permits.

The deadline to renew was originally May 18 but has since been extended to relief those affected by the pandemic.

A new deadline has not yet been set but will be announced once the Ohio Department of Health lifts the director’s order allowing permit holders to resume on-premises consumption, said a release sent by the Division of Liquor Control.

The decision to extend the deadline came when the administration began receiving word that a number of permit holders were in need of some additional relief, they said.

“We are listening and recognize the financial strain of permit renewal fees to businesses at this time,” said Jim Canepa, Ohio Department of Commerce’s superintendent of the Division of Liquor Control.

Businesses that have already sent in their renewal will be contacted by the Division of Liquor Control and given the option to either proceed with the renewal or take advantage of the extended deadline.

“This encompasses approximately 8,400 establishments holding roughly 20,000 permits in the Western portion of the state," the release said.

Permit holders that have a deadline of June 1 are also eligible for the extension.

In addition to the extended renewal, the Division of Liquor Control enacted a one-time liquor buy back program that refunded more than $1.4 million to more than 800 establishments and passed a permit to allow certain businesses to sell drinks to go with meals.

“Extending the deadline will provide economic relief to permit holders by giving them some breathing room for renewal submissions,” Canepa said.
