BUTLER COUNTY — A 35-year-old inmate at the Butler County jail tested positive for the coronavirus over the weekend, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

The medical staff at the jail tested him when he began showing signs of a low grade fever, said Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

Once the inmate tested positive, he and his cell mate were moved to a different Butler County jail facility that has been prepped for situations where an inmate may test positive for the virus, the post said.

“My corrections and medical staff have prepared diligently to handle any inmate that tests positive for COVID-19," Jones said.

"We were lucky for a while but rest assured, we will protect staff and the inmate population the best we can to ensure everyone’s safety during these unprecedented times.”

The cell mate has been tested and is waiting for the results.

This is the first confirmed case in the Butler County jail.
