Coronavirus: Male, 88, is first confirmed COVID-19 death at Koester Pavilion

Miami County Public Health announced its first confirmed coronavirus death this afternoon at Koester Pavilion, an 88-year-old male, county Health Commissioner Dennis Propes said.

The Miami County Coroner has identified the man as Alan Shump of Troy.

Two others at Koester Pavilion have died awaiting test result for coronavirus.

Both Koester Pavilion near Upper Valley Medical Center and Springmeade Health Center in Tipp City have had presumptive positive cases of coronavirus within the last few days.

There are currently 13 residents and 4 staff members at Koester Pavilion with presumptive positive results, Propes said.

There are now four residents who have presumptive positive cases at Springmeade.

One worker that works at both facilities has also has a presumptive positive test.

Health officials are monitoring 31 other residents at Koester Pavilion and two at Springmeade, Propes said.

Miami County Public Health staff have formed a team comprised of additional staff from Ohio Department of Health, Public Health Dayton Montgomery County and Clark County Combined health District to address the tracing of contacts with these cases.

“In the days and weeks ahead, the community can expect to see an increase in positive cases. This is due to test results becoming available and continued testing of those who are ill with COVID-19 symptoms. It is important to understand that this is expected and not cause for alarm,” Miami County Public Health said.
