Coronavirus: Ohio unemployment urging alphabetic filing process to streamline claims

Unemployment applications continue to rise - What you need to know

OHIO — Starting Sunday, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services is urging Ohioans to use a system that uses the first letter of your last name to determine when you should file weekly unemployment claims.

The state said the alphabetic system is being used to try and streamline claims processing and expedite payments.

“The new process will help relieve pressure on our system so that claims can be filed more easily and paid more quickly,” said ODJFS Director Kimberly Hall. “Once a claim is processed, payment can be made by direct deposit within three business days.”

  • SUNDAY: People with first letter of last name beginning in A through H should file
  • MONDAY: People with first letter of last name beginning in I through P should file
  • TUESDAY: People with first letter of last name beginning in Q through Z should file
  • WEDNESDAY: All applicants should file
  • THURSDAY: All applicants should file
  • FRIDAY: All applicants should file
  • SATURDAY: All applicants should file

The state said claimants also should set their correspondence preference to electronic to ensure fastest processing, as opposed to U.S. mail.
