Scott Nichols was identified as the person who was found dead in the river by a fisherman, according to Montgomery County Coroner Dr. Kent Harshbarger.

Dayton police and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office were called to the area of the river and Monument Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

Lt. Matt Beavers said police are unsure about the circumstances on how the man’s body got to the location in the river or how long it had been there. However Beavers noted that it appeared the man’s body had been in the water for “quite some time.”

The coroner has not said how Nichols died.

Additionally, Beavers said police are unsure where the man might be missing from due to the high river levels from the past week.

“With the water levels, with the previous snow and the rain that’s happened, the water levels being up, we’re not even sure where this gentleman is missing from,” Beavers said.

Homicide detectives were called to assist in the investigation, Beavers said.
