SPRINGFIELD — UPDATE @ 4:15 p.m.:
A woman suffering from apparent burn injuries was pulled from her burning apartment this afternoon and rushed to a waiting medic unit at the Springwood Apartments at 840 E. E. John St.
Rick Avery was working with his son and son’s friend in a nearby apartment when they smelled smoke.
He said they quickly rushed into action and busted down the door to rescue the woman.

“The lady was laying on the floor, burnt in thick smoke,” Avery said. “She was moaning and crying. The main thing was to get her out of there without any of us getting hurt.”
The fire was contained to one apartment unit, and no other injuries were reported.
A medical helicopter was requested for the patient. Her condition is not known.
FIRST REPORT
Crews were called to a fire this afternoon at a Springfield apartment complex.
The fire was reported around 3:15 p.m. in the 800 block of East John Street.
A CareFlight medical helicopter was called. The Springfield Fire Division confirmed there was at least one injury reported, but it was not clear how the person was hurt.
