DAYTON — Five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment after a car crashed over a guardrail and overturned into a riverbed near the Stillwater River in Dayton Sunday night, according to a police crash report.

The incident was first reported as a water rescue in the area of Shoup Mill Road and Riverside Drive around 9:10 p.m. Sunday.
A preliminary investigation found the car was traveling west on Shoup Mill first hit a curb in the median. The impact sent the car to the right, into a guardrail, which then caused the car to overturn and go down an embankment by the river, police said in the report. Dispatch records indicate the vehicle also caught fire after it came to rest along the river.
The driver, identified as Malik Harris, 18, of Dayton, was taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment. He is listed in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The front seat passenger, a 15-year-old girl and one of the back seat passengers, Ava Wortham, 19, of Harrison Twp., were also listed in the crash report as being taken to Miami Valley Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. However, neither were listed as patients at that hospital and their conditions were not known.
Another back seat passenger, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital but was discharged later that night, according to a hospital spokesperson.
The third back seat passenger, Derrick Hill, 24 of Harrison Twp., was taken to to Grandview Medical Center for treatment and was listed in good condition Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokesperson.
