UPDATE @ 4 a.m: Gettysburg Avenue will be closed in both directions for several hours after a vehicle crashed into a funeral home Friday morning.

Officials say they responded to H.H. Roberts Mortuary, located at 38 S. Gettysburg Ave., and found a male driver trapped in a vehicle that crashed into the structure around 3 a.m.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling north on Gettysburg Avenue and lost control. This caused the vehicle to go up an embankment, hit a pole and a fire hydrant, and crash backwards into the funeral home, causing severe damage.

The vehicle went airborne at one point, witnesses told police.

Once the driver was extricated from the vehicle, he was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries.

Excessive speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, police said.

The investigation is in its early stage, so officials said they have not determined if  alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident.
