Crews witnessed heavy fire and smoke coming from the garage of a home as they arrived in the 20 block of North State Street around 3 a.m.
The fire could be considered suspicious as firefighters continue to investigate, said Phillipsburg Fire Department Chief Matt Rhoades. Witnesses were interviewed, he said.
A male inside the home woke up to use the restroom and get a drink downstairs when he smelled smoke. He went outside and saw the garage on fire, Rhoades said.
It’s not known if smoke detectors in the house were operating.
No one was injured, and the fire contained to the garage was quickly knocked down, said Rhoades.
No vehicles were in the garage and damage estimates were not known at the time.
Gas and electric were shut off to the house to prevent another fire from starting, Rhoades said.
The Brookville Fire Department assisted the Phillipsburg Fire Department on scene.
