UPDATE @ 6:35 p.m.: Crews rescued a gerbil named Ron from a smoky house fire on Rocky Point Road, the cause for which is under investigation, Hustead Fire Chief Larry Ridenour said.

Crews responding on a report of a large amount of smoke arrived to see flames shooting from the rear of the home.

Ridenour said the occupants had been out on a walk in the woods and returned to see all the smoke. They never went inside the house. No one was injured, the chief said.

“There was a gerbil we rescued. He’s doing fine,” Chief Ridenour said.

INITIAL REPORT

Crews are on the scene of a house fire in the 3200 block of Rocky Point Road in Mad River Twp.

The fire was dispatched about 4:40 p.m. We have not heard any reports of injury. We’re hearing all the occupants are out.

Crews are bringing in tankers with water because of the location of the address, which is south of the city of Springfield and east of Enon.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the house, which has partially collapsed onto the roof of the garage.

We have a crew on scene. We will update this developing report as we learn more.
