NEW PARIS — A man and woman were killed in a house fire on West Main Street early Friday morning in New Paris.

Firefighters responded to the house in the 300 block of West Main around 4:30 a.m. and arrived to find the house engulfed, said Northwest Fire and Ambulance District Chief Brad Simpson.

Simpson said the two victims died at the scene and he described them as being elderly, but was not able to release their names or ages pending notification of family.

Northwest Fire is currently working with the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s office to determine how the fire started, Simpson said.

Mutual aid from multiple fire departments was requested, which is typical in rural communities like New Paris, according to emergency dispatch traffic.
