UPDATE: Cold snap forces continued suspension of mail delivery across nation

UPDATE @ 10:30 p.m. (Jan. 30): Mail delivery Thursday in the Miami Valley and southwest Ohio is expected to continue without interruption, but U.S. Postal Service officials said the suspension of mail delivery will continue for some across the nation because of the lingering cold snap.

The Toledo area is the only Ohio location included in the latest mail delivery suspension list made public about 9 p.m. Wednesday.

"Extreme cold continues to grip parts of the country, with record-breaking low temperatures and dangerous wind chills," is the messaged posted to the USPS webpage Wednesday night.

"Due to the extreme weather conditions, the Postal Service has temporarily suspended delivery service in certain locations on Jan. 31 to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees."

The service disruptions will affect 3-digit ZIP Code locations in Michigan, Indiana, Chicago, Lakeland, Detroit, Illinois and Western Pennsylvania.

"The Postal Service will assess suspending other potential delivery areas based on temperature and wind chill forecasts," reads the note on the website.

INITIAL REPORT (Jan. 30)

The U.S. Postal Service will not be delivering mail today to some sections of Butler, Clark and Champaign counties because of the dangerously cold weather forecast for the region.

Postal Service officials, in a release Tuesday night, said the suspension in delivery to some 3-digit ZIP Code locations across the nation because of the weather is out of concern for the safety of Postal Service employees.

Delivery will be suspended to areas in the Ohio Valley (Cincinnati and Columbus areas) with ZIP Codes that begin with 452, 430-432.
