Dayton assistant police chief to retire at the end of the month

DAYTON — After more than 33 years of service, Dayton Assistant Police Chief Lt. Col. Mark Ecton is set to retire at the end of the month.

His retirement is effective March 1, according to a press release from the department.

“Assistant Police Chief Mark Ecton has well and faithfully served the Dayton Police Department and the Dayton community,” said Chief Richard Biehl. “His commitment to treating all persons with dignity and fairness has been a constant throughout his tenure.”

Ecton began his career with Dayton police in September 1987, starting as a patrol officer in the West Patrol Operations Division.

Throughout his career he served on the Narcotics Strike Task Force, as an advocate for the disciplinary department, a major on Chief of Staff, deputy director/assistant chief and had many more roles.

Ecton made history within the department for being the third African American assistant police chief. He has the 10th longest tenure in upper command with 17 years on the senior command staff.

“It is with the deepest gratitude that I congratulate Assistant Chief Ecton for his many years of dedicated service and wish him the best of health and the greatest success in his future endeavors," said Biehl.
