Dayton City Commission appoints 1st African American woman as new chief of staff

DAYTON — The Dayton City Commission has appointed the first African American woman to be its new chief of staff.

Verletta Jackson has been named to lead the City Commission Office, according to a City of Dayton spokesperson.

“Ms. Jackson is a lifelong public servant of the City of Dayton and her track record both within the community and at city hall speaks for itself,” said Dayton City Mayor Jeffrey Mims. “She will be a natural fit in this new role and will also make history as the first African American woman to serve in this capacity. I look forward to her leadership in the very important work of improving our community.”

Jackson has worked 33 years for the City of Dayton beginning as a Recreation aide and was recently leading the newly created Community Engagement Division of the Department of Planning, Neighborhoods and Development. She also led the Neighborhood Leadership Institute, EITC and Neighborhood Mini Grants program.

The chief of staff position will replace the Director of the City Commission Office that is being vacated by Torey Hollingsworth.
