Dayton Dragons stadium lease extended through 2060, city commits up to $4.5 million for upgrades

DAYTON — An amended lease agreement approved by Dayton City Commission will keep the Dayton Dragons home at Day Air Ballpark through 2060, with the city also committed to financing improvements to the stadium.

The previous agreement would have expired in September 2030, but under the new deal the team’s owner will pay the city $10,000 per year beginning in 2030 for three additional ten year terms.

Day Air Ballpark opened in April 2000, when the Dayton Dragons started its inaugural season as a Class-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. The team has played in Minor League Baseball’s Midwest League since it began playing.

The Dragons are expected to play in Class High-A, a promotion to the next level in the minor leagues, beginning this season.

Under the new agreement the city also is committing to securing the appropriate financing of up to $4.5 million for energy efficiency and other improvements to the 20 year old stadium.
