‘We lost everything;’ Several residents displaced after fire at Dayton apartment complex

DAYTON — A man has to find a new place to stay after a fire destroyed part of his apartment complex in Dayton Tuesday.

Dontae was one of the several residents who are now without a home because of a fire at an apartment complex in the 3300 block of Germantown Street.

“I came out with shorts on, my shoes, we lost everything in the apartment building,” Dontae said.

He said he was asleep and woke up to the smell of smoke.

“I’m going to the Red Cross and then in a couple of days they said they’re going to help me find another apartment to go to,” he said.

He and the other residents impacted made it out safe and without injuries.

District Fire Chief David Wright with the Dayton Fire Department said crews were able to get the fire knocked down quickly.

The quick response was also due to “up staffing” within the Dayton Fire Department.

“[We are] putting extra apparatus in service, because of the amount of time it takes to get across the city and demand of service we have right now,” Captain Merritt Colton with the fire department said.

Crews pinpointed the fire to an upstairs apartment.

“Obviously the slippery conditions and the cold weather makes it a little more difficult, but crews did a great job getting in and getting an early knockdown of the fire,” Wright said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
